Playing around with Spent Brass Bullet Shells...

I have a whole bunch of brass bullet shells (all ready been shot, no danger involved) that I'm dying to use in my art jewelry.  I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to cut through them?  I've tried a dremel, but it doesn't give me enough control.  I've also tried a jewelers saw, but I keep breaking the blades.  If anyone out there has any advice or ideas on how I can cut these babies, please...let me know.  They have so much potential.

Here are a few more photos of what I've done with them so far.  I have many more ideas and would love to hear your ideas as well!  What do you think?

  1. These ROCK! I have a book: Altered Curiosities: Assemblage Techniques and Projects, seem to remember Jane Ann Wynn doing some cool stuff with bullet casings [afraid the book isn't with me atm] but maybe you could find her site or something...

  4. Hi! I just ran across your post and was curious if you ever found an answer to how to get through those bullet casings. my first thought was happily a blow torch or an industrial type of saw but both of those sound a wee bit dangerous :-)
whatever the case I just found your blog and I'm already loving it. Awesome stuff!

    1. Welcome, and thank you Ziggy! I never have found a good way to cut them that makes it worth the time and set-up it would take. I just found a right angle attachment for my dremel tool, so I'm going to try using that on the dremel attached to a drill press. I'm pretty sure it's not going to be very efficient, and the cutting wheels will probably still break off as always! Oh well, still searching for the answer on that one!
